POST-HUMANUM

THEMES:

Our modern lives have been converted into code—our consumer lives cataloged and referenced as transferable and marketable data for sale. Have we become mere accumulations of information, data, to be downloaded and sold to the highest bidder? Do our physical experiences, senses and emotions only matter in the production of more data?

For some, our bodies have become useless sensory machines—"meat machines"—that are inefficient, decay, and ultimately die. These technologists are looking for ways to improve the "meat machine" by adding intelligent prostheses. Some claim that we already experience the world through our prosthetic extensions. We don't have to look far. Our smartphones are devices that enhance all our abilities. But more are planned.

Transhumanists are going even further. They seek to bypass the body entirely by cryogenically preserving the brain until future society invents the technology that will allow immortality. Death becomes a disease to be eradicated. What becomes of our humanity once it is so completely entangled with prosthetics, algorithms, and artificial bodies? A phantom humanity.

FORMAT:

Post-Humanum examines these questions through a non-narrative and non-linear lens. The in-person version creates a series of interactive scenes along an immersive promenade. The video-edited version compiles selected scenes from the entire piece. The live version will be a hybrid, combining pre-edited and live-streamed video and in-person scenes.

The content of the scenes mimics the random juxtapositions (across all media platforms) of news, advertisements, personal stories, and scientific discoveries, accompanied by a range of emotions from love to outrage. The performance will capture a social snapshot of what it means to be alive today, tomorrow and perhaps forever... while integrating a teenage and adult audience into various participatory, live and digital activities.

Babel-o-drome

Summary

Babel-o-drome is a multimedia and multilingual audience participatory event presented in situ by collectif büs123 in collaboration with the Element choir. The site-specific interactive performance looks at the following question: in today's globalized media chaos, in a world where fiction and reality (real and virtual) collide with "alternative facts" and "fake news", what is our own reality ... how do we define ourselves when confronted with commercial and political propaganda that tells us what to believe? Combining poetry, humour and fantasy, this theatrical and choral show continues the dialogue about the immigrant experience shifting between cultures, and explores the complexities of language, communication and identity.

Babel-o-drome tackles the question in a series of scenes combining dialogue, visuals, live music and audience participation. Large-scale video projections and live music make it a unique and intriguing show that can inspire the imagination of audiences of all ages.

The performance is in the form of a journey, a procession along a path, travelling with the public from one scene to another. It follows characters who are sometimes humourous, sometimes mythical, and who while in search of their identity, live through multiple technological and linguistic challenges: collective narcissism, fake family portraits, problems of communication and senseless games. When they finally reach their destination along with the public, they rediscover their true nature, free of all media artifice: a return to their essence.

This piece is inspired by Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges' short story "Library of Babel".

BABELLE ET BARBARIE

Babelle et Barbarie is a multi-lingual and multigenerational theatrical creation that draws from theatre and performance in search of meaning inside a globalised media cacophony!

Inspiration

The title is inspired by the short story "The Library of Babel" by the Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges, which describes a vast and universal library, incomprehensible to everyone except the librarian. This is the premise of the project: the globalization of cultures and the result of their blending.

Questionning:

The flood of information from all corners of the world may suggest a growing misunderstanding between cultures. We know that intercultural dialogue requires translation and interpretation, but in doing so, doesn't the message risk being transformed to the point of betraying the original intent? What is the price to pay for this lack of fidelity?

Design:

Our stage design incorporates playful, poetic, and interactive elements. The physical dimension is embodied by five performers on stage (an actress, a singer, a videographer, a musician, and a sound artist) who perform choreography, music, spoken word, and improvisations. The technical aspect relies on the creative work of a lighting designer/programmer and a technical director. We use sound objects in the composition of a live musical score. Video plays a significant role through video mapping and various media, ranging from smartphones to wall projections and monitor screens.
